If you don't have an attorney, look for a consultation on this question. If you have a DUI attorney in Tennessee, you should ask specifically about how that state's DMV notifies other states- and specifically when the suspension begins to run. What's more, if you are stopped while driving on a suspended license due to a DUI, there are often criminal penalties, including jail. That can be a real issue for many people. The problem is precisely when NY becomes aware of the action in Tennessee. That means if your license is suspended in Tennessee but you still have a NY license, the suspension will be honored. Many, if not all states, have reciprocity.
